The Wiltshire Educational Psychology Service is made up of a team of psychologists who have specialised in the application of psychology in educational settings.

All the professionals who work on this team have a qualification in educational psychology at Masters or Doctorate level. Through their training and experience in psychology and education, the Wiltshire Educational Psychology Service

  • Supports school staff to improve pupil outcomes through joint problem solving, identification of suitable strategies and targeted interventions
  • Helps schools and early years settings to identify and clarify the needs and appropriate provision of children and young people whose learning, behaviour, emotional well-being or welfare is of concern
  • Provides training workshops designed to meet the needs of individuals or groups of children
  • Supports schools and settings to meet the objectives of a statement of special educational needs through the annual review process
  • Provides parent support programmes
  • Supports parent-school communication through reviews and mediation

How the service works

Schools have a time allocation which they use to access this service and will use their allocation to address their priorities over the year. Parents should liaise with the school's Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) about whether access to an educational psychologist is appropriate.

The Educational Psychology Service will always seek consent from parental carers or the young person before entering into discussions about any individual children or young people. Any concerns are then discussed with school staff, the child or young person (at an appropriate level) and with parents/carers.

Depending on the issues, a classroom or playground observation may be conducted and/or some individual assessment work. Agreement is then reached about most appropriate next steps and how these will be reviewed.
