Valuing SEND in Education

Wiltshire Council is piloting Valuing SEND (VSEND) in a small number of primary schools to enable earlier, targeted support so children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) get the right support at the right time. VSEND does this by helping parents and schools work together to understand needs and plan support.

What’s happening?
IMPOWER has been commissioned by Wiltshire Council to trial the VSEND tool, test what works best for Wiltshire and inform next steps. This is an eight-week trial and will be supported and overseen by a Core Group of professionals, including the Wiltshire Parent Carer Council to monitor progress and outcomes.

What is Valuing SEND?
VSEND aims to help parents and schools build a shared picture of a child’s strengths and needs, and identify what support will help most. It looks across five key areas and supports better planning together.

How it Helps You
VSEND includes helpful prompts and questions so you can:
• understand your child’s needs across five key areas;
• see how well the setting is supporting those needs;
• reflect on how confident you feel supporting your child at home.

Once completed, VSEND creates a simple radar highlighting where your child’s needs are being met and where more help may be needed. This makes it easier for you and the school to agree next steps. Please see the document (What is VSEND) for more information.
