Special Care Dental Service

The Special Care Dental Service provides special care dental treatment for children and adults with additional needs who are unable to access care in general dental services because of their needs. The service has clinics that have been adapted to suit their patients’ needs, such as specially adapted dental chairs and hoists to help with transfer from wheelchair to dental chair. The service is staffed by a dedicated team of dentists and dental care professionals who have a special interest in treatment for patients with additional needs.

Access to this service is by referral from another dentist, GP, oral health practitioner, health visitor or any other health or social care professional.

Referrals are assessed and special care treatment provided if your child is considered suitable for dentistry in a special care setting due to their disabilities. This may include:-

  • Severely medically compromised
  • Learning disabilities
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Severe physical disabilities
  • Children with repaired cleft lip/palate
  • Children under 5 years of age with extensive decay for whom treatment has proved unsuccessful
  • Looked after children and those under the Child Protection Plan.
