The Challenging Behaviour Foundation

The Challenging Behaviour Foundation (CBF) is a charity for people with severe learning disabilities whose behaviour challenges. They work to make a difference to the lives of children and adults across the UK through:-

  • information about challenging behaviour
  • peer support for family carers and professionals
  • supporting families by phone or email
  • running workshops to reduce challenging behaviour
  • speaking up for families nationally

Their vision is for anyone with severe learning disabilities who displays challenging behaviour to have the same life opportunities as everyone else. They work to improve understanding of challenging behaviour, empower families with information and support, and help others to provide better services and more opportunities.

CBF has information about challenging behaviour that includes:-

  • how to manage challenging behaviour
  • specific behaviour
  • running off behaviour
  • the use of medication in the treatment of challenging behaviour
  • the impact on caring for families
  • housing – “8 ways to get a house”
  • planning for the future

Would you like to talk to another family carer, who has ‘been there’ too? For a lot of people who care for someone with severe learning disabilities, there are times when you can feel isolated, stressed or worried. A listening ear can make a real difference. The Family Linking Scheme can match you with a family carer Link Volunteer to speak to on the phone regularly. Link Volunteers are trained to provide emotional support. Having also been in a similar situation, they may be able to offer information and useful ideas. Link volunteers are not expected to advise, produce solutions or answers to all questions. Further information on how to access this service can be found [here].

For practical information or emotional support, you can call CBF on: 0300 666 0126, or email: support@thecbf.org.uk. They offer a listening ear and provide free information about challenging behaviour to anyone who supports someone with a severe learning disability.
