Things are changing in Wiltshire
Following a review undertaken (in 2007), about services for disabled children, Government made disabled children a national priority. The results revealed that in many parts of the UK, services were not meeting the needs of disabled children/young people and/or their families.
In particular, families said they want improved short breaks, young people want a better experience during transition and parent carers said they need a regular break from their caring responsibilities.
In response, Government launched a 3 year programme called 'Aiming High for Disabled Children' which set out the Government's intentions on how service provision could be improved to enhance equality and opportunities for disabled children and their families.
To support the programme, Government agreed to give each local authority extra money to help them develop and provide better services - but more importantly, AHDC set out clear expectations on local authorities to work with parents and carers in developing better services!
That's where we come in! The voice of parents and carers across Wiltshire is having a real influence on how services are now being designed and developed by Wiltshire Council and NHS.
Parents and professionals are working together to ensure services and support are better meeting the needs of disabled children and families.
